Pikeville High/Junior High Counselor Dawn Stewart is serving on the first University of Kentucky High School Counselor Advisory Board.  This board is a group of 10 high school counselors from Kentucky, Georgia, Illinois, and Texas who provide opinions and feedback on how to better serve prospective students, families, and communities.  She was nominated for this position by UK’s team of admissions counselors and is one of only seven high school counselors in Kentucky invited to serve.  Her commitments as a board member include:

  • Serve in this role for 2 – 3 years.
  • Annual two day on-campus meeting in the fall
  • Annual one day on-campus visit in the spring
  • 2-3 annual conference calls admission cycle
  • Involvement and investment – More than anything, we want your input and want you to be involved in making the Commonwealth’s flagship campus the best it can be.

The first meeting was held on November 8th and 9th on campus in Lexington.  The activities included: a student led tour of campus, overview of UK from Dean of Admissions, lunch and tour of Kroger Field and football training facilities, sessions on scholarships, housing, and student life, presentations from representatives from 10 different major programs, marketing focus group on UK branding and customer service, mission updates from UK President Eli Capilouto, tours of the Gatton Student Center, UK College of Pharmacy and the UK College of Nursing.  Ms. Stewart is honored to be a member of the advisory board and believes that her participation will better allow her to serve her students and help them transition to post-secondary education not only at UK, but other post-secondary institutions as well.  “It was very eye-opening to be able to see behind the scenes at UK.  We heard from so many different departments and colleges and I now have a wealth of information that I can pass along to the students.  Hopefully, my participation on the advisory board will translate into added opportunities for our students at UK.  The updates that have been done since Dr. Capilouto became president, like the new dorms, student center, science facility, are all beautiful and most importantly, student-centered.  Everyone at UK was so friendly and accessible.  It is a huge campus, but after two days I really felt at home.  It made me want to go back to college!”
