Minority Parent Representative sought for Superintendent Search

Minority Parent Representative Sought

Pikeville Independent Superintendent Search Screening Committee


The Pikeville Independent Board of Education is currently conducting a search for a new superintendent.  The statute requires that the Board have a screening committee to review applications and make recommendations.  One of the members of the committee must be a minority.  


If you wish to nominate yourself or someone else for minority parent representative, please return this Nomination Form to Johnny Belcher at the Pikeville Independent Board Office, 148 Second Street, Pikeville, KY 41501 or email the completed form to johnny.belcher@pikeville.kyschools.us.  Nominations will not be accepted after 4:00 PM Friday, February 21, 2020.


If more than one nomination is received, all parents are eligible to vote on February 27th or 28th at the Pikeville Independent Board Office from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm.

Congrats to PJHS 8th grader, Aneesh Sharma, for scoring the highest math score in the state at the District Middle School Governor’s Cup this past weekend.

December Scholarship Newsletter
State Football Championship Tickets

State Championship football tickets will go on sale at Pikeville High School on Wednesday, December 4th at 8:30 am.  All tickets are general admission and can be paid for with CASH, CREDIT CARD, or CHECKS made out to PHS.  Tickets are $15 and include parking at Kroger Field.  They will also be on sale Thursday during school and at the gate at Kroger Field Friday for $15.  We ask that OUR FANS sit in SECTIONS 5 & 6 and the STUDENT SECTION will be in SECTION 7.

Governor's School for the Arts Applications now open

10th and 11th Grade Students:  Governor's School for the Arts Applications are now open.  GSA is a competitive summer program for students interested in intense study and instruction in an art form.  The program is free if you are accepted and can result in scholarship money for college.  All application materials and videos must be submitted online by January 10, 2020.  You should begin your application well before the deadline date.  You may apply in up to 2 of the following art forms: Architecture + Design, Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Film + Photography, Instrumental Music, Musical Theatre, Visual Art, or Vocal Music.

PHS Class of 2019 Breaks ACT School Record

The PHS Class of 2019 broke the school record for their composite ACT score as well as broke the reading and math sections school record.  Their composite was 22.9 and the previous composite school record was 22.7.  The national average was 20.7 and the state average was 19.8 putting us significantly above those averages. 

Congrats to our staff and students for a job well done preparing our students for this important test and breaking a couple school records on the way!

Pikeville City Police and Fire Department donate school supplies to PHS

Thanks to the Pikeville City Police and Fire Department for delivering our students some school supplies. Our city is "All In" for our students and school to be #1. # GoPanthers

Governor's Scholar Program 2020 Information and Deadlines GSP

Juniors:  Governor's Scholars Program


Juniors who are interested in applying for the Governor's Scholars Program (GSP) for Summer 2020 should make an appointment with Ms. Stewart by October 15.  The application materials are available online now.    We recommend using Word, and not Google Docs to complete the application.  The teacher and community leader recommendation forms are there also.   Go to Applicants, then Applications and Forms at this link:

October-Students (and/or parents) make individual appointments with Ms. Stewart to go over the application process.

December 2-Complete applications and recommendations are due to the guidance office for district level judging.

December-District judging process.  We will inform the students who have scored at the top and will be sent on to state level judging by the last day before Christmas break so that they can still work on their applications with the feedback from the district level judges.  

January-First day back from Christmas break their final applications are due to the guidance office for state level judging.

April-Around the 15th students will be notified by mail from the GSP Program if they are in, not in, or alternate.

The Pikeville Independent School System is excited to announce that our school system is Ranked #4 in the State of Kentucky for 2020.  This ranking says a lot about our students, our teachers, our staff, and our community.  This makes everyone proud to be a Panther!

PHS Band Receives Distinguished PHS Band

Congratulations to Dr. Scott Bersaglia and the Pikeville Advanced Percussion Ensemble for receiving two DISTINGUISHED ratings at the 2019 Kentucky Music Educators Association State Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Ashley Adams Honored as a Valvoline Teacher of the Year Finalist Ashley Adams - Valvoline Teacher of the Year Finalist

Twenty-four teachers were honored as Valvoline Teachers of the Year at a ceremony on May 20 in Frankfort. Pikeville High School math teacher, Ashley Adams was one of the 24 teachers honored at the ceremony.  Government officials, state dignitaries and Sam Mitchell, chief executive officer of Valvoline, honored the teachers and recognized the Kentucky Elementary, Middle and High School Teachers of the Year. The Valvoline Teacher Achievement Award recipients were awarded cash awards and certificates at the ceremony.

Judging was conducted in March by a blue-ribbon panel of veteran educators.  Applications included information on the nominees’ teaching philosophies, teaching experiences and involvement in their respective communities, as well as letters of recommendation from peers, students, parents, administrators and others.

Congratulations Mrs. Adams for your dedication to the Pikeville Independent School students, parents, colleagues and community.

Math Counts Team Qualifies for State Math Counts Team

Congratulations to PHS Coach Ginger Mullins and her MathCounts Team! The Panthers won first place in team competition. Team members include Christina Al Akhrass, Trey Hancock, Aneesh Sharma and Maddox Parsons. Aneesh Sharma also won third place individual and Maddox Parsons won first place individual.  With this win, Maddox won a four year full tuition scholarship to the University of Kentucky, a four year $1,000 dollar scholarship to Western Kentucky University and a one time scholarship of $500 from the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers. Coach Mullins also won a $100 gift certificate for her winning team! The math Panthers are off to state in March.

Pikeville Junior High Students Participate in KMEA All State Choir Pikeville Junior HIgh All State Chorus

Pikeville Junior High chorus members recently participated in the Kentucky Music Educators Association All-State Chorus, under the direction of Barbara Kelley.  The concert took place at the Kentucky Center in Louisville, Friday, February 8 as part of the 2019 Kentucky Music Educators Association Professional Development Conference. Students were chosen for the honor in competitive auditions held this year across the state. KMEA Junior High Choir consist of students in seventh through ninth grade. 

Students who participated in the KMEA junior high choir included freshmen Sofia Hackney, daughter of Lesley and Angela Hackney, Kara Lee, daughter of Brent and Kristy Lee, Lainey Vazquez, daughter of Jose and Sarah Vazquez, eighth graders Jayden Alley, daughter of  James and Crystal Alley, Emma Hopkins, daughter of Scott and Melissa Hopkins and seventh grader Jay McNamee, son of Patrick and Nicole McNamee.

Pikeville Middle School Academic Team Advances to State Governor's Cup 2018-19 Pikeville Junior High Academic Team

Congratulation to Pikeville Junior High Academic Team for their success in Governor’s Cup Regional Tournament held at Johns Creek High School on Saturday, February 2.

Individual academic awards included first place Aneesh Sharma, second place Maddox Parsons and fifth place Noah Howie in Math. In Arts and Humanities, Christina Al Akhrass placed first and Aastha Patel placed second.  Pikeville Junior High swept the first three places in Language Arts and Science.  Chloe Olegario placed first; Grace Clark placed second; and Eli Tan placed third in Language Arts.  In Science, Christina Al Akhrass, Aneesh Sharma and Jamie Layne placed first, second and third, respectively.

In team events, the Quick Recall placed first and the Future Problem Solving team placed second.  Quick Recall members included Christina Al-Akhrass, Grace Clark, Clinton Goff, Chloe Olegario, Maddox Parsons, Aastha Patel, Aneesh Sharma, Zack Slone and Eli Tan. Future Problem Solving team members include Thomas Cranney, Noah Howie, Jenny Hu and Victoria Le.  The team is coached by Laura Cooley and Jordan Johnson.

The junior high state academic Governor’s Cup will take place in Louisville, Kentucky, at the Galt House on March 16-18.

Congratulations to PHS junior Emma Johns for being named Miss Teen Kentucky on Sunday, 1/27.

PHS STLP Showcase Qualifies for State PHS STLP Showcase Projects

Pikeville High School students Seth Clark, Riley Gilliam, & Sarah Belcher presented their idea and design for a retractable net for the Pikeville Pond to catch debris during flood events.

They will be continuing their work in 3D modeling of the engineering concept and pitching the idea to city officials.
