Get Ready for the Presidents Challenge Physical Fitness Test

The Presidents Challenge Physical Fitness Test
This program will again be offered to all 6th, 9th and 12th grade students enrolled in the Pikeville Independent School System. This program helps assess the current fitness level of our youth and encourages them to stay active.
What it’s all about…
The Presidential Physical Fitness Program offered at Pikeville Independent Schools includes five events that measure muscular strength/endurance, cardio respiratory endurance, speed, agility, and flexibility. The five events are Curl – Ups, Shuttle Run, Endurance Run/Walk, V-Set Reach, and Right Angle Push –Ups. The program offers three levels of rewards. Everyone is a winner in the President’s Physical Fitness Challenge.  All five events are listed in the article so you and your family can prepare for the President’s Challenge.
Evan Swofford and Evan Kimberlain advance to state STLP

Sixth grader Evan Swofford and fifth grader Evan Kimberlain  recently won the online digital art and photograph portion of STLP (Student Technology and Leadership Program) Competition. Their pieces have been invited to state competition at Rupp Arena on March 22.   
Dress Like a Coal Miner Day

During coal fair week, Pikeville Elementary honored our coal miners on "Derss like a Coal Miner Day, Friday, February 3.  The students who participated were judged on the ones who dressed most like a coal miner and awarded certificates. 
Pikeville High School Junior Iman Ali selected for Inaugural Student Council

Pikeville High School student Iman Ali was one of eleven students chosen to serve on the first Next-Generation Student Council, a new group formed by Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday. The Next-Generation Student Council is a year-long program for Kentucky public school students in grades 10-12. Public school students in grades 10-12 were invited to apply for membership and a committee of KDE representative reviewed and scored all applications.
Pikeville Junior High Cheerleaders bring home title of Grand Champions

The Pikeville Junior High Cheerleaders have a great deal to cheer about. In addition to winning the Kentucky Middle School state championship, the junior high team won the title of Grand Champion by scoring higher than any other squad no matter school size or squad size. Several of the teams are nationally ranked and the PHS junior high cheerleaders managed to beat a team that nobody in the country has beaten in four years. 
Pikeville Junior High Academic Team - Runner Up in the Governor’s Cup District Competition

Our Pikeville Junior High Academic Team competed in the Governor’s Cup District Competition on Saturday, January 21 at the University of Pikeville. The team brought home ten medals. Seven of our students placed in written assessment and are now eligible to compete in regional competition. 

The students bringing home a win included: Sean Hillwig - 1st place in Math and Social Studies; Sam Bishop - 1st place Science; Michael Gaunt - 2nd place in Arts and Humanities; Trey Grant - 3rd place in Language Arts; Michael Gaunt - 4th place in Language Arts; Cameron Lane - 4th place in Math; Thomas Ratliff - 4th place in Science; Thomas Ratliff - 5th place in Social Studies and Nicole Kinder - 5th place in Composition.
 
PHS Academic Team wins High Q

The high school academic team participated and won the 2012 season of the television game show High Q.
 
“High-Q , the locally produced high school quiz show that aired for decades over the tri-state area has returned to television. Once again hosted by Ernie G. Anderson, this incarnation of the popular program is produced with Electronic Media students of Ohio University Southern in Ironton.”   
Senior Zack Burgy-Vanhoose recognized as one of Nation's Best Top Kicking Specialists

Pikeville High School senior Zack Burgy-Vanhoose has been recognized as one of the nation’s best top kicking specialists by Ray Guy Prokicker.com. Players were selected after the Prokicker.com staff watched and coached the players during camps, and considered the players’ performance on the field during the 2011 football season. 
PES students selected to sing in Kentucky Children's Chorus

Pikeville Elementary students, Star Manning, Britney Hopkins, Lindsey Lockhart and Maura McCoy were recognized by the Pikeville Board of Education on Tuesday, January 17, after being named to all-state chorus. In receiving this honor, they will represent Pikeville Elementary in the Kentucky Children’s Chorus. Comprised of fifth and sixth grade students, The Kentucky Children’s Chorus will perform as part of the Kentucky Music Educators Association Professional Development Conference held in Louisville, February 8–11, 2012. This chorus will perform on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 5:15 pm.
Bryce Williams wins Big Blue Madness Free Throw contest at Rupp Arena

Pikeville Elementary School sixth grader Bryce Williams shook off some early jitters and then rallied to win the Big Blue Madness Free Throw contest at Rupp Arena in front of more than 20,000 rowdy Wildcat fans. Williams qualified for the event back on June 24th by winning the FT contest at Coach John Calipari’s Basketball Camp at Pikeville High School. One winner was chosen from each of Coach Cal’s 11 Satellite Camps throughout the state to advance to the finals at Big Blue Madness.
One of the Nation’s Best

Alexis Stanley has a passion for cheerleading and it shows. Alexis, a Pikeville Elementary sixth-grader, was recently featured in The Cheerleader, a national cheerleading magazine.
        
Senior Lindsey Isner scores 1,000th point

Senior Lindsey Isner made history on December 20th and joined nine other lady Panthers to have scored 1,000 points during their high school basketball career.
          Isner scored her 1,000th point during their game against Henry Clay at Dunbar High School in Lexington. Isner is the only senior on this year’s team.
Evan Rhodes selected to participate as Legislative Page

Evan Rhodes, son of David and Christi Rhodes, was selected to participate as FRYSCKY’s Legislative Page Day on February 1, 2012. This is the third year a student from Pikeville Elementary School has been chosen.
Leaders of the Pack

Pikeville Elementary fifth graders, Keith Mullins and Logan Blackburn, were recently awarded the Arrow of Light award by the Boy Scouts of America, the highest award that can be achieved by a cub scout. To earn this prestigious award, Mullins and Blackburn had to progress from rank to rank, learning new skills as they progressed. Each of the ranks and awards in Cub Scouting had its own requirements. As they advanced through the ranks, the requirements got more challenging, to match the new skills and abilities they learned as they got older.
           
PRIDE Club is recognized for their GREEN efforts

Pikeville High School’s PRIDE was recognized for project of the month in December for Eastern KY PRIDE.
In their efforts to help make PHS and our community a greener place to live, Pikeville High School celebrated America Recycles Day on November 15 by starting the day off on the radio promoting recycling, what to recycle, where to recycle and why to recycle. The day continued with the AP Environmental Science students going to the elementary school teaching the fifth and sixth grade about recycling. The day ended with the Panther PRIDE members going to Velocity and Food City to share information on recycling with the public. 
Panthers Win 59th Annual Pikeville Invitational Tournament

The Pikeville Panthers went into the PIT (Pikeville Invitational Tournament) on Wednesday, December 28th, expecting a win. They got their win and beat the Beechwood Tigers 77-60. Senior, Will Branham, scored a whopping total of 28 points to lead his team to their victory. Ethan Rowe only played in the second half of this game and still reached double digits scoring a total of 13 points.
Senior Panthers participate in Border Bowl

Senior Panthers, Randy Maynard and Zack Burgy-Vanhoose had the honor of playing in the Kentucky/Tennessee Border Bowl on Saturday, January 7, at the University of Cumberland in Williamsburg, Kentucky. The Border Bowl is a non-profit organization established to promote high school football in Kentucky and Tennessee. The objective of the organization is to provide an All-Star Game featuring the top players in Kentucky and Tennessee.
Seniors Rule

Pikeville High School seniors have taken a step in the right direction in planning for the future and had another reason to celebrate the New Year. With the assistance of Mrs. Ann Samons, Pikeville High School’s guidance counselor, 100 percent of the senior class completed and submitted at least one college application, along with the required documentation, to a college of their choice. To celebrate their efforts, December 13th was dedicated as College Sweatshirt Day. Seniors, administration and faculty members were encouraged to wear a college sweatshirt from their alma mater or college of their choice. 
Panther Varsity Football Team brings home Regional Championship

This season, 15 seniors, along with a group of determined younger players, stepped up and brought home a special season, a regional championship and Panther pride once again. The Panthers entered into the semifinals for the first time since 2004 by defeating Fairview 20-18.

Pikeville Junior High Girls Basketball Team claims county championship

On the heels of the junior high football team’s victory, our Pikeville junior high girls’ basketball team captured this year’s county championship by defeating the Dorton Wildcats and finishing with a record of 21-8. The team is coached by Misty Prater.
Pikeville Junior High Football County Champs

The Pikeville junior high football team, coached by Mr. Shane Hensley, had much to be proud about as they ended their 2011 football season and became county champions.  They brought home the gold by defeating the Belfry Pirates.   The team ended their season with a record of 15-2.
Will Branham signs with Morehead State University

On Friday, November 11, 2011, Senior Will Branham signed a letter of intent to play college golf with Morehead State University. Will, the son of William D. Branham, III and Bonnie Branham, has attained many accomplishments during his school golf career.
 
Student Technology Leadership Program participants recognized for outstanding accomplishments

Three teams representing Pikeville Elementary Student Technology Leadership Program participated in the regional showcase held at the EXPO Center on Thursday, 3. As a result of their efforts, each team will be representing Pikeville Elementary at the state competition to be held at Rupp Arena on April.

Superintendent Green Installed as President of Kentucky Association of School Superintendents

Pikeville Independent Schools Superintendent Jerry Green is the new president of the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents, taking over during the KASS summer conference in Lexington.
Congratulations Class of 2011

Eighty-eight seniors are now graduates of Pikeville High School.  Commencement ceremonies for the class of 2011 were held on May 29th at Alumni Auditorium.

 

Pikeville Elementary and Pikeville High School join forces

Pikeville Elementary and Pikeville High School joined forces to raise approximately $2,400 for the March of Dimes.  The preschool/kindergarten classes will be awarded a pizza/ice cream party provided by FBLA members for raising the most money during the drive.  On September 24, Pikeville High School students walked during the annual community walk held at Bob Amos Park.  Community businesses, organizations and schools helped raise $33,000 for the cause.
Down on the Farm

Pikeville Elementary brought the farm to school, Thursday, September 22.  Parents and students enjoyed a night on the farm during Family Literacy Night from 5:30-6:30, with special guest appearances by chickens, ducks, geese, goats and rabbits. 
Three Retire from PES

Pikeville Elementary School is losing three outstanding educators to retirement this year. 
AR Winners

Congratulations to these Accelerated Readers from Pikeville Elementary School.  Students read books all year gathering points.  Cami Gaunt was the over all school winner with 333.1 points.  Other winners include: Nathan Campoy, Kenzi Hale,  Kylie Jones, Aaron Smart, Dillon Kelly, Jason Lin and Christian Tackett.
Two New Faculty Members Join the Panther Family

Pikeville Independent would like to welcome Mrs. Paula Martin and Mrs. Annie Hobbs Sword to their teaching staff at Pikeville Elementary School. Although new to the district as teachers, both Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Sword are alumni of Pikeville Elementary and Pikeville High School. 
Council Visits Libraries

Libraries are different everywhere.  Some Pikeville High School students got the chance to see that first hand.  The PHS Library Council traveled to Lexington on May 18th to tour libraries at the next level.
Pikeville Elementary Honors Grandparents

As we know, grandparents have a tremendous impact on our lives. To honor grandparents, Pikeville Elementary hosted their 3rd annual Grandparent’s Day on September 8. During this new tradition, grandparents are invited to enjoy lunch with their grandchildren.

Mr. Joseph Taylor Mahan and Mrs. Elizabeth “Libby” Lockhart White were recognized for their outstanding athletic and coaching contributions to Pikeville High School on Friday, September 8. Both were inducted into the Pikeville Hall of Fame during an induction ceremony held at Pikeville High School.

Congratulations to the Pikeville High School FBLA for their tremendous efforts during the state competition.  The following FBLA members were recognized during the awards ceremony and the top three places will advance to nationals in Orlando, FL.
PES Academic Team Honored at BOE

The Pikeville Elementary School Academic Team was honored at a recent Pikeville Independent Board of Education meeting for their accomplishments this year.  The team placed 3rd in the district Governor's Cup competition and 3rd in the regional Governor's Cup Competition.  The Future Problem Solving team placed first in both the district and regional competition.
PJHS 7th Grade Tours Courthouse

Ms. Wheeler’s seventh-grade History and Heritage Class at Pikeville Middle School toured the Pike County Courthouse as part of the class’ curriculum.
PHS English Teacher Receives Grant

Chinese Delegation Visits Pikeville Independent

The Pikeville Independent School System was happy to welcome the Chinese Delegation from Ankang, China who visited Pikeville recently.  The Delegation got the chance to tour both Pikeville High School and Pikeville Elementary School.
PES Celebrates CATS

Pikeville Elementary School celebrated CATS Awards Day 2011 on April 13th, honoring students who had received high scores on CATS testing for the 2009-2010 school year. 
Pikeville High School selected for Advance Kentucky

Pikeville High School has been selected as a part of AdanceKentucky. PHS was selected along with 19 other high schools to participate in the program. Sixty-four schools across the state are now implementing the AP Teacher Training and Incentive Program.

PHS Scores High Marks on PLAN and EXPLORE

The Kentucky Department of Education has released the results of the EXPLORE and PLAN tests given last fall.  Pikeville Independent 8th graders scored 15th highest in the state on the EXPLORE test. Tenth grade students scored 3rd in the state on the PLAN test.
Troop 12 Visits Board to Earn Badge

Boy Scout Troop 12 visited the Pikeville Independent School Board meeting to fulfill requirements on their Citizenship in the Community merit badge.  This meritbadge teaches the scouts about their own local community government.

Velasquez Serves as Legislative Page

A Pikeville Elementary School 6th grader got to see what life is like as a legislator.   Ariana Velasquez attended the legislative session as a page for State Representative Leslie Combs on February 15th.
